Vocab Week 1 Flashcards
Hypothesis
Educated guess or a prediction about how the independent variable will affect the dependent variable
Experiment
An organized procedure to test your hypothesis
Independent variable
What is being tested or the variable that the scientist changes. Plotted on the x-axis of a graph.
Dependent variable
Variable effected by the independent variable, what is being measured. What is being observed. Plotted on the y-axis of the graph.
Constant
All variable that stay the same. this allows for a fair test.
Data
Measurements and observations gathered from the experiment.
Control group
The normal group which does not contain the independent variable. This group is used to compare the results of the factor being tested.
Line graph
Used to show relationships between variables. Represents data that changes over time.
Experimental group
The group contains the independent variable.
Variable
Anything that could change during an experiment.
Controlled experiment
An experiment where only one factor is being tested.
Qualitative data
Describes the quality of something. Used to investigate how or why something happens. Based on senses. Ex: Color, taste, smell.
Quantitative data
Data involving numbers. Physical measurements such as mass, length, temperature, and volume. Made with tools. Ex: 32 inches, 47 lbs.
Observations
Facts not opinions
Inference
Idea of what you think may have happened.
Objective or Problem
The question that the experiment will answer.
Buffer
Organic substances that help maintain a constant pH.
pH
A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.
Acid
Compound that forms hydrogen ions (H+) in solution, has pH from 0-6.
Base
A compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution; pH from 8-14.
