vocab unit 1 Flashcards
Cell
Cell - The most basic unit of life
Cell membrane
Cell membrane- controls what comes into and out of a cell, found in both plant and animal cells
Cell Wall-
Cell Wall- the ridged outer layer of a plant cell
Chloroplast-
Chloroplast- captures energy from the sun and uses it to produce food for plant cells
Chromatin
Chromatin- tiny strands inside the nucleus that contain the instructions for directing the cell’s functions
Cytoplasm-
Cytoplasm- gel-like substance where cell organelles are found
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Endoplasmic Reticulum- passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another
Golgi Bodies-
Golgi Bodies- receive proteins and materiels from the ER:; packages and then distributes them
Lysosomes-
Lysosomes- use chemicals to break down food and worn-out cell parts
Nucleolus-
Nucleolus- found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes
Nucleus-
Nucleus- contains DNA, which controls the functions of the cell (control center of the cell)
Mitochondria
Mitochondria- produces energy a cell needs to carry out its functions (powerhouse of the cell)
Ribosomes
Ribosomes-assembles amino acids to create proteins
Vacuoles-
Vacuoles- stores food, water, waste, and other materials
