Cultural landscape
Cultural landscape – The visible imprint of human activity and culture on the landscape. Think buildings, roads, farms — how humans have shaped the land
Possibilism
Possibilism – The theory that the environment sets certain constraints, but culture is otherwise determined by social conditions and human choices. It’s kind of the opposite of environmental determinism.
Functional region
Functional region – A region defined by a particular set of activities or interactions that occur within it. Think of a metro area with a central city and surrounding areas linked by commuting patterns (like a newspaper delivery area or a subway system reach).
Time space compression
The idea that thanks to improvements and transportation have shrunk the world
Assimilation
Assimilation –! It’s when a minority group or culture adopts traits of a dominant culture to the point that the original culture is lost. Happens a lot in migration contexts or colonization.
Von Thünen Model
model of agricultural land use around a central city. It shows how transportation cost affects what gets grown where.
Agglomeration
Agglomeration – This is the clustering of similar businesses in one area for mutual benefit.
Land tenure
the legal rights people have to the land they live on or use.
Urban sprawl
urban sprawl specifically refers to the uncontrolled or haphazard expansion of urban areas into surrounding rural land
Neocolonialism
where powerful countries exert control over less developed countries, not through direct political control, but through economic, cultural, or political pressure
Devolution
The process by which regions within a state gain political strength and autonomy at the expense of the central government
