Absurdism
Intentionally ridiculous or bizarre behavior of a character
Allegory
Story, picture, or other piece of art that uses symbols to convey a hidden or ulterior meaning, typically a moral or political one
Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound at the start of a series of words in succession whose purpose is to provide an audible pulse that gives a piece of writing a lulling, lyrical, and/or emotive effect
Allusion
An implied or indirect reference especially in literature
Ambiguity
Unclear or confusing, or it can be understood in more than one way
Anti-thesis
A contrast or opposition between two things
Augustan Age
1700-1750, literary era
Ballad
A simple poem with a simple rhyme scheme, usually portrayed in songs and music
Baroque
A style in European culture where a lot is going on, Bach’s music
Bathos
Something is very proper and then it becomes immature/ (Think of shower example)
Burlesque
An absurd or comically exaggerated imitation of something, especially in a literary or dramatic work; a parody
Canon (of literature)
A collection of works that are considered to be the best and most representative of a literary or cultural tradition
Bombast
Speech or writing that is meant to sound important or impressive but is not sincere or meaningful
Carpe diem
Lliterally means “pluck the day,” was used by the Roman poet Horace to express the idea that we should enjoy life while we can
Characterization
The way an author or an actor describes or shows what a character is like
