Alliteration
When two or more words start with the same letter sound in a line.
Repetition
When a word or phrase is repeated in a poem.
Assonance
When two or more words use the same vowel sound, but do not rhyme.
Consonance
When two or more words use the same constant sounds
(NON-VOWEL SOUNDS), often at the end of words, and the words do not rhyme.
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of rhyming in a poem based on the last word in each line and labeled with letters for each rhyming sound.
Free Verse
A poem which doesn’t follow any rules but focuses more on describing a scene or idea.
Narrative
A poem that tells a story.
Haiku
A three-line nature poem with a 5-7 syllable pattern. Doesn’t rhyme.
Form / Structure
The way a poem is laid out on a page, the rhyme scheme and rhythm of the poem, along with a set of rules each specific type of poem must follow.
Simile
Comparing two things using “like” or “as”
Metaphor
Comparing two things without using “like” or “as”
Personification
Giving non-human things human qualities.
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration.
Allusion
A reference to a famous book, film or poem.
Imagery
Using descriptive words & phrases to create a picture in the readers mind.
