Denotation
Dictionary definition of the word
Example: Happy- feeling or showing pleasure or contentment
Connotation
Meaning of the word and the emotions and implications associated witht that word.
Example: Thin (positive & attractive) VS Scrawny (negative connotation)
Arguments to Inquire
Seeking to investigate more information. To figure out more than you know to build understanding.
Arguments to Negotiate Differences
A form of argument that share differences then reach to an agreement or compromise. (finds truth and understanding)
Arguments to Assert
To inform the reader their view of the story.
Arguments to Dominate
Attempting to win the argument. “Dominate”
Active Voice
When the subject preforms the action of the verb
EX: The CHILDREN ATE cookies
Passive Voice
When the subject recieves the action of the verb.
EX: The COOKIES WERE EATEN by the CHILDREN.
Syntax
Sentence structure, This would include the length and order in which you place words. (changes meaning)
EX: The old man carries the lady The lady carries the old man
Diction
Word choices that changes the emotion/tone of any sentence.
EX: I am tired —> I am so exausted!
Objectivity
Not biased; factual
EX: The newspapers and the news cast wont be biased. They are always factual
Subjectivity
Opinionated; Biased (one saide of their story)
EX: Celebrity magazines–> drama, fashion, gossip!
Rogerian Model
Where the listener has to repeat the opposing argument and to avoid misinterpretation. Used to negotiate differences.
