What is genetics?
The study of how genes and how traits are passed down from one generation to the next.
Genetics encompasses the mechanisms of inheritance and variation in living organisms.
Define trait.
A characteristic or quality that makes a person or thing unique. Traits can be physical, behavioral, or inherited.
Traits can be observable features like eye color or behavioral aspects like temperament.
What are inherited traits?
Traits that are passed down from parents to their children.
Inherited traits result from the genetic material inherited from both parents.
What are genes?
Instructions for traits like eye color and hair type that are passed down from parents to their children.
Genes are segments of DNA located on chromosomes.
What are genes made of?
DNA.
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) carries the genetic instructions for the development and functioning of living organisms.
Where are genes found?
On chromosomes inside cells.
Chromosomes are structures that organize and carry genetic material.
What is a chromosome?
Like a tiny thread inside your cells that holds all your genetic information. Half from mom, Half from dad.How you look and your eye color, kind of like blueprints.
Chromosomes consist of DNA tightly coiled around proteins and are found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
