Vocab quiz G1- G5 Flashcards
Fossils
Preserved remains of an organism, usually from prehistoric times.
Fossil Record
A data set providing information on the total number of fossils that have been collected over time
Strata
Multible layers of material
Paleontology
The study of fossils from earlier geologic times
Excavate
The process of systematically removing earth in order to find or isolate buried remains.
Laws of superposition
a basic law of geology that states undisturbed strata are deposit chronologically (youngest layer on top)
Index Fossil
a commonly found fossil that existed in a narrow range of time that’s used to identify geologic time periods
Trace fossil
A fossil of a foot print, tail borrow , or other trace of an animal rather that of the animal its self.
Biodiversity
a measurement or description of the number of different living organisms in an environment
Tribbit
a small segmented animal with exoskeleton that lived in Paleozoic times
Erosion
The movement of soil, rock, or rock fragments by water or wind.
Igneous rock
Rock framed when magma or lave cools and crystallizes on or below the surface
Metamorphic Rock
Rock formed from other rock that has been exposed to heat and pressure and has changed into a different rock
Sedimentary rock
rock formed over time as sediments have become compacted and cemented together
Weathering
the process of wind, rain, ice and other factors breaking large rocks into smaller pieces called sediment
clastic sedimentary
made from fragments of a variety of rocks
Organic sedimentary
made from materials left by one living organism
Chemical Sedimentary
made after water evaporates leaving behind mineral crystals such as calcite, hallite, or rock salt.
Foliated Metamorphic
have striped or banded appearance ; the bands are made of minarals that have flat or needle like crystal structures
Non Foliated Metamorphic
Made of minerals with blocky crystal structures; they do not have the banded appearance of foliated rock
