Vocab pt. 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Quisiera v. gustaria

A

Quisiera - “I would like…”
- comes from the verb “I want” - Querar

Gustaria - “would like”
- it literally means “it would be pleasing to [someone], and does not include the “who” would like it
– which is why you have to add an indirect object pronoun to the sentences using gustaria, so the listener knows WHO “would like”

“I would like to see the menu.”
- Quisiera ver un menu.
- Me gustaria ver un menu.
– the “Me” [or te, se] must be added when gustaria is used, or the “would like” belongs to no one.

why is the indefinite article “el/la/las” used when describing 1) streets & places, 20 days of the week, 3) languages even if the sentence does not include direct translation of “the”

Nouns that take an article - is a person, place, thing or idea, that typically requires an “indefiniative article” such as el, la, las, even if English does not use it.
ex. Estoy en la calle 63 - I’m on 63rd street. “la” is used as indef. article to describe “the street” even if it’s not used in English.
