Vocab. Properties and Change part 2 Flashcards
Chemical Reaction
The process in which atoms are rearranged to form new substances, the processes by which chemicals interact to form new chemicals with different compositions
Chemical Formula
Uses chemical symbols and numbers to represent a given substance. Ex - H20
Chemical Equation
An expression that uses symbols to show the relationship between the starting substance and the new substances that are produced be a chemical reaction
Coefficient
A whole number placed in front of a chemical formula to tell the reader how many copies of that molecule are needed to balance the equation. (2H20 - there are 2 water molecules)
Subscript
A small-sized number on the bottom right of the symbol. It refers to the number of atoms of the element (H20 - there are 2 Hydrogen atoms in water, H-H-O)
Reactants
The substances that participate in the chemical reaction
Product
The substances that are formed in a chemical reaction.
Endothermic Reaction
Any chemical reaction that absorbs heat from its environment, feels cold
Exothermic Reaction
a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat, feels hot
Law of Conservation of energy
States that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can only be changed from one form to another.
