Complication
“RISING ACTION” Events that establish a conflict (man v. man/himself/society/nature)
Basic Situation
“EXPOSITION” The background of setting, situation, and characters

Climax
The most dramatic part of the story where’ the main conflict is resolved’
Resolution
Final part of the plot when the remaining conflicts or problems are resolved
First Person
When one of the characters, referred to as “I”, tells the story
Point of View
Relationship of the storyteller, or narrator, to the story. The perspective from which a story is told
Limited Third Person
When the narrator reveals the thoughts of only one of character but refers to the character as “he” or “she”
Omniscient Third Person
And all-knowing narrator who tells the thoughts of all the characters and things that no one character could know
Satire
The type of writing that ridicules the weakness of either people in general or a specific group (The Simpsons television show ridicules many groups, such as parents and teachers)
Symbol
A person, place or thing that represents himself and something else
Theme
Main idea that the writer of a literary work communicates to the reader
