Vocab plant Flashcards
Regulate gas exchange between the plant and environment
Stomata
Pairs of cells that control gas diffusion by regulating the opening and closure of stomatal pores
Guard Cells
A vascular tissue that transports water throughout a plant’s body
Xylem
Plant vascular tissue that conducts glucose made in the leaves during photosynthesis to all other parts of the plant.
Phloem
The evaporation of water from a plant’s leaves, stem, or flowers.
Transpiration
The male reproductive organs of flowering plants, consist of an anther and filament.
Stamen
Modified leaves and are often brightly coloured to attract specific pollinators to the flower
Petals
Produced by most types of flowers of seed plants for the purpose of sexual reproduction
Pollen
Contains ovules, which develop into seeds upon fertilization (female organ of the flower)
Ovary
The part of a stamen that produces and contains pollen
generally borne at the tip of a long slender stalk known as a filament.
Anther
Found in the center of a flower and helps to collect pollen. waxy or sticky to collect the dry pollen.
Stigma
The ability of the plant to re-orient the shoot growth towards a direction of light source.
Phototrophism
Promotes cell growth and elongation of the plant, alters the plant wall plasticity making it easier for the plant to grow upwards. Also influences rooting formations.
Auxin
When a plant will respond to touch from an external source. The plant will move toward or away from the contact
Thigmotropism
The force within the cell that pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall
Turgor Pressure
