Desmoplasia
A
Growth of fibrous or connective tissue. Lesion (tumor) feels firm

Dysplasia
A
Usu. of metaplastic epithelium. Disordered growth (characteristics of malignant neoplasm) but does not invade through basement membrane (yet). Not neoplasms because mild-to-moderate may be reversible. Benign but pre-malignant.

Carcinoma in situ
A
Full thickness dysplasia of an epithelial layer that has not yet invaded through the basement membrane

Metaplasia
A
One type of cell is replaced with another, hardier, cell type. Usu. cuboidal to squamous, e.g. esophageal, bronchial, cervical squamous metaplasia
