Compound Sentence
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinate conjunction (and, but, or) or by a semicolon.
E.g. “The singer bowed to the audience, but she sang now encores.”
Compound-Complex Sentence
A compound-complex sentence contains two or more principal clauses and one or more subordinate clauses.
E.g. “The singer bowed while the audience applauded, but she sang no encores.”
Cumulative Sentence
A sentence that begins with the main idea and adds additional information, usually for description. Also called a loose sentence.
E.g. “We reached Edmonton that morning after a turbulent flight and some exciting experiences.”
Coherence
The quality of a piece of writing in which all the parts contribute to the development of a central idea, theme or organizing principle.
Connotation
Implied or suggested meaning of a word. The emotional shadings attached to a word beyond its literal definition.
Complex Sentence
A complex sentence contains one or more principal clauses and one or more subordinate clauses
E.g. “He backed his car into the oak tree they had been planted by his aunt.”
Denotation
The literal meaning of a word
Diction
Refers to writer’s word choice, essentially with regard to their correctness, clarity or effectiveness.
Didactic
Literally means teaching. Didactic works have primary aim of teaching or instructing.
Discourse
Spoken or written language, including literary works.
Includes: description, exposition, narration, argumentation.
Epanalepsis
Opening and closing a sentence with the same word or phrase for surprise or emphasis.
Euphemism
The substitution of a mild or less negative word or phrase for a harsh or blunt one: “pass away” vs “die”
Epistrophe
The repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences.
Figurative language
A type of language that varies from literal language: figurative language does not mean exactly what it says. Forces reader to use imagination.
Foreshadowing
A method used to build suspense by providing hints of what is to come
