Active Layer
The layer highlighted in the layers palette the appears in parenthesis in the document window title bar.
Additive Colors
Combination of colors that make white. (R,B,G). When all values are 255, white results.
Anchor Points
Small squares similar to fastening points that connect straight or curved line segments
Angle
Setting that determines where a drop shadow falls relative to the text
Base Layer
Bottom layer in clipping group, serves as group’s mask
Baseline
An invisible line on which type rests
Blur filters
blurs things… used to soften a selection or image
Brightness
The measurement of relative lightness or darkness of a color. (percentage 0%-100%)
Character palette
Helps you control type properties. Located on the tool options bar
Clipboard
Temporary storage area in operating system
Clipping group
Links contiguous layers
Clipping path
Used when you need to extract a Photoshop object from within a layer, place it in another program, and retain its transparent background
CYMK image
Has at least four channels (C,M,Y,K)
Endpoints
Anchor points at each end of an open path
Feather
Method used to control the softness of the selection’s edges, by blurring the area between the selection and the surrounding pixels.
Filters
Alters the look of the image. Customized special effects: distortions, blurring, and changes in lighting
Flattening
Merges all visible layers into one (background layer). Deletes all hidden layers.
Font
Characters with similar appearamce
Font family
Represents a complete set of characters, letters, and symbols for a particular typeface. Divided into san serif, serif, & symbol.
Guides
Horizontal and vertical lines that you create to help you align objects. “Bluelines”
Handles
Boxes on the sides of objects
Histograph
A graph displaying the numeric values of colors used to make adjustments in the input and output levels.
History palette
A record of each action performed during a session. (allows 20 levels of undo).
Kerning
Controlling the amount of space between two characters
Leading
the vertical amount of space between lines of type
Marquee
Series of dotted lines indicating a selected area that can be edited or dragged into another document
Menu bar
Contains menus containing PS commands
Merging Layers
Combining layers into one (Flattening is merging all layers and deleting hidden layers)
Pixel
Dot in a bitmapped image that represents a color or shade (1 in = 96 px)
Point
Unit of measure for font sizes (1 in = 72 points)
Rasterize
Converts type layer into image layer
Resolution
Number of pixels per inch
RBG image
red, blue, green channels
Subtractive colors
BLACK = C,M,Y,K absorbing all color
Tolerance
The range of pixels that determines which pixels will be selected. (lower the tolerance, the closer the color is to the selection)

Uniform space between characters
