Ex: “hi” or “what’s up” are colloquial expressions for “hello”
Diminutive
Suffix that indicates small size, youth, familiarity, affection, or contempt.
Ex: the diminutive dollhouse furniture enchanted the youngsters
Metonymy
Substitutes a different world but closely associated word.
Ex: “the hand that rocks the cradle” refers to a mother.
Oxymoron
An expression that contains contradictory terms.
Ex: good grief
Palindrome
Words that spell the same forward and backward.
Ex: rotor and civic
Portmanteau word
A word formed by sounds and meaning of two words.
Ex: swag + yolo = swaglo
Spoonerism
An often comical switching of the first sounds of two or more words.
Ex: lack of pies. Pack of lies
