Vocab Final Flashcards
Rectiliniar
Straight lines
Curvilinear
Curved lines
Unity
Principle of organization in which all elements are working together
Composition
The placement of elements in the work of art
Rule of Thirds
Guideline where composition is arranged on the axis of two vertical and two horizontal lines that break the surface into three equal parts
Symmetrical Balance
Composition where elements on either side of a design are equally balanced
Asymmetrical Balance
A design that looks balanced despite the lack of symmetry, with two sides that are not the same
Radial Balance
Composition based on a circle with its design extending from the center
Organic Design
Based on organic and non linear shapes
Geometric Design
Based on geometric lines and shapes
Representational
You can tell what it is
Non-Representational
You can tell what is being represented but its not realistic
Abstract
Nothing about the work is recognizably representing anything
Value
The lightness or darkness of tones or colors
Hatching
A drawing technique using parallel lines to create value
Cross Hatching
A drawing technique using crossed parallel lines to create value
Stippling
A drawing technique using an intensity of dots to create value
Scumbling
A drawing technique using controlled free form lines to create value
Additive Color System
Light projection (TV, Video, Computer screen)
Subtractive Color System
Pigment, Paint
Pigment
The stuff in paint that contains color
Primary Colors Additive
The colors from which all other colors are made: Red Blue, Green.
Primary Colors Subtractive
The Colors from which all other colors are made: Red, Blue, Yellow.
Secondary Colors
The colors derived from mixing primary colors in equal parts
Tertiary Colors
The colors derived from mixing primary and secondary colors next to each other on the color wheel
Analagous Colors
The colors next to each other on the color wheel
Complementary Colors
The colors opposite to each other on the color wheel
Pattern
An orderly arrangement of shapes, lines, and/or colors, forming a consistent arrangement or sequence
Module
When discussing patters, this means a unit of the pattern
Regular Pattern
A regular pattern occurs when the intervals between the modules and the modules themselves are regular
AB…AB…AB…AB
Alternating Pattern
Essentially a regular pattern that has more complex modules or transformations
AB…CD…AB…CD
Progressive Pattern
Occurs when there is a gradual increase or decrease in the size, number color, or some other element of the module
Narrative Art
Art that tells a story
Visual Texture
The illusion of texture; a flat surface that appears to have a varied surface
Tactile Texture
Actual texture that can be felt by your hand
