Vocab Exam 2 Flashcards
Electoral authoritarian regime
Regularly scheduled elections with contestation, but they are usually not free/fair. Dictatorship. Example: Russia
The power sharing problem
The dictator has to share power with the selectorate, but there’s no way to constrain or monitor the dictator. The dictator can amass money/power unchecked
Monarchy
Power determined by bloodline/family.
Military dictatorship
Executive relies on being part of, or networking with, the military
Personalist dictatorship
Cult of personality, one person amasses most power
Dominant party dictatorship
One party dominates access to political office and policy control. Sometimes smaller political parties (electoral authoritarian regime where elections are unfair), sometimes only members of the dominant party allowed to run for office.
Parliamentary pitfalls
Long time to form government. Government itself can be unstable with disagreeing parties and votes of no confidence. CCR pushes policymaking behind closed doors
Cohabitation
In semi-presidential system, president and PM of different political parties
Dictator’s Dilemma
Because people are incentivized to look like they support the dictator, the dictator never knows the extent of their true support
