Apostrophe
words that are spoken to a person who is absent or imaginary or to an object or idea. Ex: Macbeth and dagger
Allusion
A reference to a work of literature, film, etc.
Synecdoche
a figure of speech in which a part is used to designate the whole or the whole is used to designate a part.
Litotes
fig of speech in which a positive is stated by the negating its opposite.
allegory
work of literature in which characters, events, and items are directly symbolic of specific social figures and themes.
hyperbole
fig of speech in which deliberate exaggeration is used
imagery
writing that uses strong sensory detail.
conceit
fanciful poetic image or metaphor that likens one thing to something else that is seemingly very different.
anaphora
repetition of specific phrases specifically used for dramatic or emphatic effect.
onomatopoeia
fig or speech in twice words imitates sounds.
alliteration
repetition of the same or similar sounds at the beginning of the words.
antithesis
fig of speech in which words and phrases with opposite meaning are balanced against each other.
connotation
associations and implications beyond the literal def of a word. ex: thrift vs. cheap

a type of metaphor in twice something closely associated with a subject is substituted for it

giving a non-living thing human/active qualities

recurring, universal character quality/motif in literature
anachronistic
a person or object out of date

praise which is only apparent and which suggests blame instead
mock epic

creating a tension between laughter and horror. (sick humor)

linking together with no commentary items which normally do not go together

brief story or tale told by a character in a piece of literature.
consonance
repetition of two or more consonants with a change in the intervening vowels such as pitter-patter
aphorism
ex:”early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealth and wise.”
anadiplosis
repletion of the last word ex: The crime was common, common be the pain”
