Jury
A group of citizens chosen to hear evidence and make a decision in a court of law and determine guilt or innocence.
Republic
A form of government in which citizens elect representatives to speak or act for them ex: Rome
Tribune
An elected official who represented the interests and protected the rights of the plebeians by using their veto power.
Patrician
The ruling class, members of the noble (wealthy) families who controlled all power in the early years of the Roman republic.
Forum
The center of life in Rome. A gravel clearing not much bigger than a soccer field
Plebeian
A common farmer, trader, or craft worker in Ancient Rome who was an ordinary citizen
Veto
The power to stop any action in government. The tribunes had the power to veto any of the consuls’ actions that were unfair to the plebeians, they shouted “I Forbid” to stop any unfair action.
Dictator
A leader who rules with absolute power, total control over a government
Census
An official count of people living in a place
Aqueduct
A human made channel that carries water over a long distance; helps to irrigate dry lands
Consul
Head of government, usually with limited term of office
Legions
Large groups of romans soldiers
