Consultation
Position in which patient is seated with the dental chair back at a 90 degree angle. Used for patient entry and release from dental chair.
Upright position

Triturate
Foot controlled or pedal device that is used to operate and control the hand pieces
Rheostat
Patient is reclined in dental chair with patients head positioned lower than the feet. Also known as, trendelenburg
Subsupine position
Patient is reclined in dental chair with patients nose and knees at same level
Supine position
Positioning zone that is based on the clock concept. Right handed operator, dental assistant is positioned in zone of 2 to 4 o’clock; left handed operator, dental assistant is positioned in 8 to 10 o’clock
Assistants zone
Aka CTS; injury associated with repetitive or continuous flexing and extending of the wrist.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Aka CTD; injury associated with ongoing stresses to joints, muscles, nerve, and tendons
Cumulative trauma disorder
Study and adaption of how people work, including anatomical and physiological characteristics of people in the work environment
Ergonomics
A “finger rest” at a point in the mouth that is designed to rest and support the hand while using an instrument or hand piece in the patients mouth, also helps prevent slipping while providing stabilization for the operators hand during procedures
Fulcrum
Refers to the manner in which a person can conserve energy while performing a task
Motion economy
Location the person performing the procedure operates within. Based on clock concept. Operator is positioned and performs in zone 7 to 12 o’clock for right hand ; 12 to 5 o’clock left hand
Operators zone
Area above or behind reclined patient. 12 to 2 o’clock right hand ; 10 to 12 o’clock left hand.
Static zone
Area through which the instruments are passed across patients chest. Operator positioned 4 to 7 o’clock right hand ; 5 to 8 o’clock left hand
