Element
Substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances

A group of combined substances that can me broken down
Heterogeneous mixture
The parts of a mixture noticeably different from one another
Homogeneous mixture
The substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one substance from another
Solution
When substances dissolve and form a homogenous mixture
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time
Pure substance
Matter that always has the same composition
Colloid
Contains intermediate sized particles in a solution
Physical property
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the compositions of the substances in the material
Viscocity
The tendency of a liquid to keep from flowing
Conductivity
How well heat flows in a material
Malleability
The ability of a solid to be hammered without shattering
Melting point
The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid
Boiling point
The temperature at which a substance boils
