Summary conviction offence
A crime that is considered less serious and carries a lighter penalty
Indictable offence
A crime that is more serious than a summary conviction
Hybrid Offence
An offence that the crown can either try as a summary or indictable offence
Homicide
A killing of another human being, directly or indirectly,
Culpable homicide
A killing for which the accused can be held responsible
Non-culpable homicide
A killing for which the accused cannot be held responsible
Murder
The intentional killing of another human
First-degree murder
A killing that is planned and premeditated.
Second-dree murder
Any murder which doesnt fit the guidelines of first degree
Infantacide
The killing of a new-born infant by the childs mother
Manslaughter
Any culpable homicide not classified as murder or infanticide
Provocation
Words or actions that could cause a reasonable person to behave irrationally or lose self control.
Assult
Threatened or actual physical contact without consent
Aggravated assult
Wouding maiming, disfiguring, or endangering the life of the victim
Sexual assault
Touching of a sexual nature that is not invited or conselsual
Sexual assault with a weapon
A form of sexual assult that involves the use of weapons, threats of physical injuries
Aggravated sexual assault
Sexual assault that involves wounding, maiming, disfiguring or endangering of the victims life.
Theft
Taking property permanently or temporarily without the owner permission
Colour of light
The honest belief that a person owns or has permission to use an item
Theft over
The indictable offence of stealing goods over $5000
Theft under
The hybrid offence of stealing goods under $5000
Robbery
The theft of a personal property through violence or the threat of violence
Breaking and entering
Braking or opening something in order to enter the premises without permission with the intent to commit an indictable offence
Mischief
Willfully destroying or damaging property or data, interfering with the lawful use of property of data
