Trauma
A catastrophic crisis that involves events so sudden, massive, threatening that they overwhelm cognition and meaning making, feeling regulation etc.
Compound crisis
A situation in which a current crisis rekindles unfinished business from previous crisis
Coping mechanisms
The methods people use to overcome reduce or accommodate the demands of stress
Decompensate
The gradual process of becoming less organized and able to cope with adversity
Locus of control
A psychological principals referring to ones perception of personal power and place in the world and the extent to which people see themselves as capable of effectively influencing outcomes and accomplishing desired goals
Discrepancies
Inconsistencies between to statements between thoughts and feelings between intentions and behaviors and between verbal and nonverbal communication
Complex trauma
Exposure to repeated ongoing interpersonal violence such as that experienced by battered women
Information sharing
The introduction of new concepts or information the client may be unaware of as a means of widening possibilities or extended opportunities
Limit setting
Technique of restricting a clients inappropriate or destructive comments in order to maintain comfortable boundaries
Delayed grief reaction
Survivors of a recent loss suddenly experience grief from an earlier loss that was not grieved at that time
Precipitating events
Circumstances that set off a crisis
Emotional contagion
Absorbing another’s distress and becoming distressed oneself
Professional boundaries
Lines of demarcation between clinician and client as they come together in a work focused relationship.
Resilience
The capacity to adapt competently to adverse or hazardous conditions
Self disclosure
Clinicians purposeful sharing of their own personal demographic info and experiences with clients
