Hiragana history...
Created by a Buddhist monk over 1200 years ago for women as they were not allowed to learn kanji. There are 47 unique characters that can represent the entire Japanese language.

Katakana history...
Katakana was created by using portions of kanji unlike hiragana which is a very simplified version of kanji. Children in Japan learn Hiragana first, then katakana, and finally kanji.

Kanji history...
Kanji consists of over 10,000 characters. In 1981 the Japanese minister of education announced 1,945 commonly use kanji called joyou kanji. By the 6th grade, the average Japanese student knows half of these.
