Vocab And Big Ideas Flashcards
What is a shoot of a plant?
Portions of the plant that are above the ground
What are the roots of the plant?
Portion of the plant that are below ground, collect water and nutrients
What are the three types of ground tissues?
Ground Tissues, Vascular Tissues, Dermal Tissues
What is Ground Tissue?
Makes up the body of the plants, subdivided into three types of cells
What are the 3 subdivided cell types in Ground Tissues?
Collenchyma cells, parenchyma cells, sclerenchyme cells
What do collenchyma cells do?
Provide flexible and mechanical support, often found in stems and leaves
What are parenchyma cells?
Allow CO2 and O2 to diffuse through intercellular space
What are sclerenchyma cells?
Protects seeds and supports the plant.
What are the two characteristics in Vascular Tissues?
Xylem and Phloem
What are the Xylem properties?
Supports structure that strengthens plant, function as passageways for the transport of water
What are the two subclasses of Xylem cells?
Vessel elements and tracheid cells
What is the Phloem in Vascular Tissues?
“Highway” for plants, assisting in the movement if sugars
What are Dermal Tissues?
Protective outer layer for plants
What is the epidermis of plants?
The “skin”
What are the function of guard cells?
Control the opening and closing of gaps, aka stomata
