colony
A group of people who leave a native country to form a settlement in a new place and are subject to a native nation.
Colonies are subject to a parent nation.
(Countries that were colonies at one time: India, Fiji, Pakistan, Cuba.)
settler
A person who moves with a group of others to live in a new area.
indigenous
Native, local, original, or first.
governor
The head of government in a state or territory.
Puritan
A member of a Protestant religious group in England and New England.
Quaker
A member of a religious group known as the Quakers; they believe that anyone could talk to God directly. (Without the help of a priest or minister.)
plantation
A large farm used to produce cash crops like tobacco and cotton.
Indigenous Groups
People whose ancestors were the earliest known inhabitants of a particular place.
New England Colonies
The colonies located in the Northeast, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hapshier, and Rhode Island.
Middle Colonies
The colonies are located between New England and the South; they include Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Southern Colonies
The southernmost colonies, including Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virgina.

A document granting the recipient the right to settle a colony.
joint-stock company
A company in which investors buy stock in return for a share of the company’s future profits.

A grant of land given to colonial settlers who paid their own way.
