  1. When approaching the resident, ask the resident “Are you choking?”
  2. If resident cannot speak, and/ or if they have their hands on their throat, this is a sign that resident is choking
  3. Call for help
  4. Raise the patient off the bed or chair and get behind the patient
  5. Place your fist between the sternum and navel
  6. verbalize that you go in and up on the patient three times, making a motion of rolling in and up.
  7. You will need to ask if they are still choking. They will say “no”
  8. place patient in recovery position
  9. or lay patient on their side on a bed
