Partisan Politics
The belief that loyalty to a party rather than your own beliefs is of the highest importance
Bipartisanship
The rare cooperation between the 2 parties
Tribalism
Extreme devotion to those with similar views to the point where one excludes those who think otherwise
Zero-Sum Politics
When one party gets a “gain,” it is seen as an automatic “loss” for the opposite side
Naturalization
The process in which residents gain US citizenship
Bill of Rights
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution protecting individual liberties
Electoral College
A body of representatives (electors) that aid in the election of the President and VP by casting votes per voting district
Congress
The bicameral system composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives
House of Representatives
Group of 435 members that are represented by district as determined by state population
Senate
Group of 100 members, consisting of 2 from each state elected “at large” by the entire state’s majority vote
Caucus
A meeting of party members to agree on leadership roles
House Rules Committee
The group that helps determine the priority of bill debate on the Congressional floor
Federalism
The dual-structured government between state and federal power in which varying issues are determined by different branches
Redistricting
The redrawing of district voting lines to account for population changes observed in the census
Reapportionment
The gain/loss of representation in Congress due to state population change. Some states may lose a Rep while others may gain one since the 435 members must always be split between the 50 states
Gerrymandering
The manipulation of district borders for uneven/corrupt political gain, illegal
Incumbent
A currently seated member of Congress (already elected)
Political Action Committee (PAC)
A group that can legally provide candidates with money for re-election campaigns
Casework
State/district representative efforts to make good connections with the public in hopes of gaining their vote
Standing Committee
A long-term committee that solves re-occurring issues
Select Committee
A temporary committee for issues that arise unexpectedly
Joint Committee
When a House and Senate member work together for advisory purposes only
Conference Committee
A committee that works out House and Senate disagreements on a bill before sending it to the President
Subcommittees
Smaller, specific divisions that cover certain issues and legislative bills regarding those issues
