Synonym
Word/phrase that means exactly/nearly the same as another word/phrase
String of characters
Letters, numbers, symbols used as search terms which the information tool matches to chew ate results list
Record
For every item included in info tool, there’s a separate record. The record displays detailed information about the item
Unit search term
Two or more words acting as one thing that we want to stay together in the results enclosed within quotation marks
Word bank
List of individual words/short phrases that could be search terms for a specific topic
Truncation
Adding a symbol to the end of a root word to search all possible endings
Wildcard
Inserting a symbol within a word to search possible alternatives
Boolean operators
AND, OR, NOT are examples, used to combine two or more separate search terms
Nesting
Using () to group together synonyms or related terms. The computer will search these terms first
Prepositions
Extra words in a search set that create phrases which distort the search results
Natural language
Search sets that are constructed as we speak
Acronym
Abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words; pronounced as a word
False hints
Search results that aren’t on target with your information need, but appear in list based on how the search was constructed
Multiple meanings of words
Homonyms and homographs(same spelling, different pronunciation and meaning) can lead to false hits
Typographical errors
Typing a word wrong even when the correct spelling is known
