Vocab Flashcards
Adaptation
A genetically inherited trait that increases an organisms fitness
Convergent evolution
Is the independent evolution of similar traits in different species
Pleiotrophy
When changes in one trait lead to changes in other traits or trait
Exaltation
A trait that is being used for a different reason that the original reason it evolved
Vestigial
Traits that used to be used for something. But no longer serve that function
Bipedal
Walking on two feet
Trade offs
You cannot be good at everything; being good at one thing means you have less energy to invest in another
Evolutionary mismatch
When an adaptation is no longer helpful because the environment changed
Adaptation plasticity
Is passed down from a parent to child
Phenotypic plasticity
Is when an individuals phenotype changes because the environment changes
Reciprocal transplant experiment
Is when you swap populations between two environments to see how it affects their fitness
Asexual reproduction
When you reproduce by making clones of yourself
Sexual reproduction
When you reproduce by mixing your genes with another individuals genes
Life history
Is all the steps in an individuals life
Behavior
Is how individual organisms respond to changes in their abiotic and biotic environment
