Vocab Flashcards
A structure that is present in many species that is similar in function but found in different forms and inheritance
Analogous Structure
A species that is found and restricted to one area
Endemic Species
A process that introduces a new species from a preexisting species; A change in allelic species overtime
Evolution
A species that no longer exists; has no known individuals
Extinction
Preserved remains or traces of an organism that once lived on Earth
Fossils
A decrease in genetic variation due to the formation of a new population of a small number of individuals coming from a larger population
Founder Effect
An explanation stating that new species arise from modifications over generations
Gradualism
A physical characteristic that was inherited from and ancestor resulting in a similar trait
Homologous Structure
A group of the same species, living in the same area and reproducing
Population
The process of breeding an organism with the result of the organism having desired genetic traits
Selective Breeding
Genes moving in and out of a population, changes in allelic frequencies are a result
Migration
A process in which organisms that have a certain trait are able to survive and produce compared to other forms of their species.
Natural Selection
Features of behaviors, morphology or genetics that serve to prevent mating or breeding between two different species
Isolating Mechanism
A species living outside of a distribution range that has been introduced through deliberate or accidental human activity
Non Native Species
An explanation of a species being stable over long periods of time with occasional rapid change that may cause a species to make a new species
Punctuated Equilibrium
