Nutrients
natural chemicals in food used by your body for energy, growth, and repair
Protein
found in plant and amimal foodds, protein is necessary for good health
Carbohydrate
starches and sugars found in plant foods used by your body for energy
Fat
an oily substance found in some plant foods, fish, and meat that is important for the health of all cells
Minerals
found in very small amounts in food and necessary for good health. Different vitamins and minerals do different things, that’s why your body needs so many.
Grams
a metric measurement of weight (1g = .03 oz)
Fuel
used for energy
Artificial sweetener
a sugar substitute
Hydrogenated oil
a fat that has been chemically changed from a liquid oil into a solid fate through a process called hydrogenation
High fructose corn syrup
corn syrup sweetener used in processed food
Portion
a recommended proper amount or serving of food

extremely overweight
Cholesterol
a natural waxy substance found in the blood. Too much cholesterol can clog arteries and cause heart disease.
Whole grain
the whole small seed of rice, corn, wheat or other plants that we use for food. Includes all parts of the grain kernel including the bran, the germ and the endosperm

a measurement of how much energy is in a food
Percentage
one part of 100, or part of a whole
Saturated fat
a solid, hard fat at room temperature. Saturated fats are not healthy
Unsaturated fat
healthy fats that are liquid at room temperature
Calcium
an important mineral with a specific job to keep your body healthy (including keeping bones healthy, blood pressure low and weight under control)
Sodium
an important mineral your body needs to maintain water balance, keep blood pressure stable, and help muscles and nerves.
Iron
an immportant mineral that helps carry oxygen from our lungs to other parts of the body, helps muscles store and use oxygen, and plays a role in digestion
Digestion
how food is broken down into energy that your body can use
Intestines
a long and twisting organ in your body where digested food is absorbed
