The reason or intent an author has for writing a text.
Purpose
The author is trying to convince the reader to believe an idea or take action on an issue.
Persuade
The author is trying to teach the reader facts about person, place, thing, or event.
Inform
The author is trying to keep the reader’s interest with a story.
Entertain
The author is telling how to do something or how something works.
Explain
The author helps the reader visualize a person, place, or thing. It usually uses the five senses.
Describe
A type of writing that is telling a story. The story could be made up OR true.
Narrative Writing
A type of writing where author is telling what something looks like, sounds like, or feels like.
Descriptive Writing
A type of writing where the author is trying to inform or teach the reader facts.
Expository Writing
The attitude the author has about the topic. This can be found in their word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Tone
