Uses analogy to compare two things
Eg: “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
Simile
Uses like or as in an analogy to compare two things
Eg: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water.”
Allusion
A reference to past literature or history
Devotional Poetry
Poetry that, packed with meaning and artistry, increases the reader’s commitment to God and the godly life
Allegory
Symbolic fictional narrative that conveys a meaning not explicitly set forth in the narrative.
Has 2+ levels of meaning
Essentially massive metaphors
Uses symbols but is different from symbolism in that it is a complete narrative
Symbol
Any object that stands for another which gives it a particular meaning
Writer’s Values
The infusing a literary work with the political or religious beliefs of the writer
Personification
Giving human qualities to objects or animals.
Allegory
Form of a story using symbolic figures, actions, or representations to express truths
Sonnet
Two Types: Italian/Petrarchan Sonnet and the English/Shakespearean Sonnet
Have 14 lines and a fixed rhyme scheme
