Vocab Flashcards
What is weather?
Weather is the day to day changes in temperature, wind, precipitation, humidity and air pressure.
What is climate?
Climate is the average or usual weather pattern the occurs in a region over a large amount of time.
What is wind?
Wind is the air that moved from one place to another
What are clouds?
Clouds are water droplets or ice particles floating in the atmosphere. Clouds usually form when air rises, cools, and concourses.
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is water as a liquid or a solid that falls to Earth. Precipitation includes rain, snow, sleet, hail, and freezing rain
What is Barometric pressure?
Barometric Pressure is the air pressure that is caused by the weight of all the air in the atmosphere pressing down on Earth
What is Temperature?
Temperature is the measurement of heat in a substance
What is humidity?
Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air
What is a thermometer?
A thermometer is the tool used to measure heat in a substance.
What is an anemometer?
an Anemometer is a tool that measures wind and speed.
What is a barometer?
A barometer is a tool that measures barometric pressure
what is a rain gauge?
A rain gauge is a tool that measures how much rain has fallen
What is a hygrometer?
A hygrometer is a tool that measures humidity.
What is a weather vane?
A weather vane is a tool that measures wind direction.
What is air?
Air is a mixture composed of odorless, tasteless gasses that surround Earth. On Earth these gasses are nitrogen, oxygen, Co2, argon, water vapor, and other trace gasses.
What is the atmosphere?
The atmosphere is a mass of air that surrounds Earth above it’s surface. It also includes liquid and solid particles. The characteristics of the atmosphere vary with altitude.
What is altitude?
The altitude is the measurement of a distance above the Earth’s surface. Elevation is another term used to refer to altitude of distance above the Earth’s surface.
What is elevation?
The action or fact of elevating or being elevated. Augmentation of or increase in the amount or level of something.
What is air pressure?
Air pressure is the pull of gravity on all the air in the atmosphere pressing down on Earth
What are trends in data?
Data trends are common patterns found in a set of data
What is air mass?
An air mass is a large body of air with similar temperature, pressure, and humidity. An air mass can be hot, warm, cool, and cold, depending on the temperature of land or body of water it was formed over
What is solar energy?
Solar energy is energy associated with the light that is generated by the sun. Solar energy can be transferred to heat energy.
What are air currents?
Air currents are predictable, common patterns of air movement due to differences in temperature. Air currents move from cool high-pressure areas, to warmer, low pressure areas. These up and down movements are air currents.
What is density?
Density is the measurement of how much mass is present in a specific volume of a substance, including air
What is a front?
A front is the boundary between air masses of different temperature, pressure, and density.
What is a cold front?
The boundary of an advancing mass of cold air.
What is a warm front?
The boundary of an advancing mass of warm air, in particular the leading edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system.
What is water vapor?
Water vapor is water in its gaseous state. Water vapor is invisible
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is the process by which molecules of a liquid change to gas
What is condensation?
Condensation is the process by which water vapor molecules in the air change to liquid water
What is dew?
Dew is water droplets that form by condensation of water vapor
What is a dew point?
a dew point is the measure of humidity in the air at which dew will start to form. Dew point is given in terms of temperature.
What is fog?
Fog is a cloud that has formed with its base on the ground
What is a meteorologist?
a specialist who studies processes in the earth’s atmosphere that cause weather conditions.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the release of water vapor into the air by plants
What is the water cycle?
The water cycle is the continuous motion of water on Earth as it moves between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, (bodies of water) and geosphere (land)
What are ocean currents?
Ocean currents are streams of water within the ocean that move in regular patterns
What is Salinity?
Salinity is salt content. Salt water = more dense than fresh water, so it holds more heat
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a theory of an idea assumed to be true for the purpose of further investigation
What is convection?
Convection is heat energy moving from one place to another due to the motion of the warm and cold masses of fluid.
TRUE OR FALSE: the most abundant gas in our atmosphere is oxygen?
FALSE: The correct answer is nitrogen
TRUE OR FALSE: At higher elevations, cold air masses become more dense as the molecules slow down and move closer together
True!
