Vocab Flashcards
Matter
any substance that has both mass and volume. (everything) (anything that weighs something and takes up space)
mass
the amount of matter contained in a substance
volume
the amount of space an object occupies
density
mass per unit volume
solid
substance with definite shape, definite volume, and a high density
liquid
substance with definite volume but takes the shape of its container
gas
substance with no definite shape nor definite volume and a very low density
element
a pure substance made up of only one atom
atom
the smallest part of matter that still maintains the properties of that substance
nucleus
the positively charged center of an atom that contains most of the mass of of the atom and very little of the atoms volume
electrons
negatively charged subatomic particles
molecule
a group of atoms chemically bound together; the smallest unit of a compound
compound
2 or more types of atoms chemically bound together
chemical formula
shows a total number and kinds of molecules in a compound
subscript
a number written in the lower right corner of an element symbol showing how many atoms of the element exist in that compound
coefficient
a number written before a formula to represent the number of molecules present of that compound (H2O. 2 is the coefficient)
mixture
made of two or more different substances that are physically joined but not chemically bound together
protons
positively charged subatomic particles
neutrons
neutral subatomic particles
solution
a mixture in which one form of matter is dissolved into another
solute
the substance that is dissolved
solvent
the medium the substance is dissolved in
physical change
change in matter that may alter the size, shape, or phase but the atoms are not rearranged to form new substances
chemical change
change in which atoms are rearranged to form a new substance
