Vocab Flashcards
Musculature
All the muscles of the body or the muscles in a particular part of the body
Striated
Striped appearance underneath of a microscope
Tendon
A cordlike, nonelastic, white fibrous band of connective tissue
Origin
Beginning of a muscle where it’s tendon is attached to a stationary or nearly stationary bone
Insertion
Ending of a muscle. is where it’s tendon is attached to the bone that moves when the muscle contracts and relaxes
Belly
Where the muscles mass is the greatest. Usually midway between the origin and the insertion
Bursa
A thin sac of synovial membrane filled with synovial fluid. Acts as a cushion to reduce friction where a tendon rubs against the bone in a joint
Facia
Wrapped in each muscle. A thin connective tissue that joins with the tendon.
Aponeurosis
A wide, white fibrous sheet of connective tissue. Sometimes composed of several tendons that attaches a flat muscle to a bone or to other deeper muscles
Retinaculum
Nearly translucent band of fibrous tissue and fascia that holds down tendons that cross the wrist and ankle
Eversion
Turning a body part outward and toward the side
Inversion
Turning a body part inward
Muscle fascicle
A bundle of individual muscle fibers. The run parallel to each other so that, when they contract, they pull in the same direction.
Muscle fiber
One long muscle cell. Has hundreds of nuclei along its length to speed up the chemical process that occur as it contracts.
Myofibrils
Each muscle fiber is composed of myofibrils. They contain thin strands of protein (actin) and thick strands of the protein (myosin) that give skeletal muscle it’s characteristic striated appearance under a microscope.
