Vocab Flashcards
Muscles most involved, prime or primary movers, muscles which cause or control joint motion through a specified plane of motion
Agonist
they work in cooperation with agonist but have the opposite motion (synonym for contralateral or opposing muscle groups)
Antagonists
wasting away or decrease in size of tissue or of an organ,or the entire body; may result from death pressure, ischemia, malnutrition, decreased work, hormone change
Atrophy
referring to musculotendinous unit that crosses 2 joints
Biarticular
SHORTENING occurs within the muscle fibers. POSITIVE contraction or POSITIVE work, lifting a weight, moving AGAINST gravity or resistance
Concentric
LENGTHENING occurs within muscle fibers. muscles are lengthening under tension, NEGATIVE contraction or NEGATIVE work, lowering a weight, moving WITH gravity or resistance
Eccentric
ability of tissue to regain its original size after being stretched
Elasticity
ability of tissue to stretch and extend when force is applied
Extensibility
originating outside of the joint where found or upon which it acts
Extrinsic
enlargement of a part, due to an increase in the size of its cells
Hypertrophy
belonging entirely to a part both the origin and insertion are within the part or segment
Intrinsic
property of a muscle to receive and respond to stimuli which can come from nerves, electric shocks, or chemical substances and muscle contractions
Irritability
form of isotonic contraction in which maximum resistance is provided through the full range of movement. Muscle length is changed but speed of movement is constant
Isokinetic
static contraction. A muscle contraction where tension is developed in the muscle but the fibers do not change length.
Isometric
dynamic contraction. muscle contraction where either shortening or lengthening occurs under varying degress of tension
Isotonic
