Vocab Flashcards
A devotional prayer asking mercy “on us and on the whole world,” which was composed by St. Faustina Kowalska, who had visions of Christ as the source of Divine Mercy.
Chaplet of Divine Mercy
A physical representation of Christ on the Cross used to help the faithful to focus on the mystery of his Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
Crucifix
To kneel down on one knee as a sign of reverence to the Blessed Sacrament when entering or leaving a church or when passing in front of the tabernacle
Genuflection
Blessed water; its use as a sacramental is a reminder of our Baptism and a means of sanctification
Holy Water
A particular method of reading and meditating on Scripture.
Lectio Divina
Also called the Divine Office, it is the official prayer of the Church and allows the faithful to pray throughout the day with Psalms and other biblical readings
Liturgy of the Hours
A devotional prayer, usually involving a petition, prayed or repeated over the course of nine days.
Novena
The earthly remains or personal items of a saint, which are venerated as sacred objects that connect us with those who have gone to Heaven

A popular Marian devotional prayer using Rosary beads and involving meditations on specific sets of scenes or “mysteries” in the lives of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary

An action or object that disposes us to God’s grace
Sacramental
Refers either to part of the habit of a man or woman in religious vows, or to the smaller version worn by lay people who are members of a particular third order or confraternity
Scapular
The act of worship. This is the humble acknowledgment by human beings that we are creatures of the thrice-holy Creator. By obeying the First Commandment, people acknowledge and respond to the revelation of the glory and power of God.
Adoration
The act of tracing the Cross with the right hand from the forehead to the breast and then from shoulder to shoulder. By the early third century, the practice of making the Sign of the Cross was deeply rooted in the Christian world.
Sign of the Cross
The pious practice of meditating upon Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. This may be done by either walking the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem or passing from one image depicting Christ ’s sufferings to the next in a church
Stations of the cross
Showing devotion and respect to Our Blessed Mother, the angels, and the saints as faithful witnesses to the Faith, or to sacred objects reserved for the worship of God (for example, the Book of Gospels). Veneration is distinct from adoration or worship, which is due to God alone.
