Vocab Flashcards
Polar covalent bond
Results from electrostatic attraction between polar molecules, which are formed by unequal electron sharing in a covalent bond
Non polar covalent bond
A bond in which the bonding electrons are shared equally between two identical atoms
Metallic bond
Bond consisting of nuclei of metal atoms surrounded by a sea of shared electrons
Organic
A compound containing carbon
Functional group
In o Chem, they are specific groups of atoms or bonds within molecules that are responsible for the characteristic Chem reactions of those molecules
BASICALLY the variable part of a molecule that also determines a lot about its function and properties
Polar bond v. Polar molecule
Polar bond: occurs between atoms and can either cancel each other out to make a nonpolar molecule or be unbalanced to make a polar molecule
Polar molecule: polarity over the entire molecule and not just atom to atom
Isomer
One of a group of compounds having the same chem formula but different molecular structures
Stereoisomers
Molecules with the same formula and same connectivity between atoms but with different spatial arrangements of atoms
Constitutional(structural) isomers
Same molecular formula different bonding patterns
Diamagnetic
Substance with no unpaired electrons. Weakly repelled by a magnetic field
Paramagnetic
Substance with unpaired electrons; attracted to a magnetic field
Ionic bond
Bond formed as a result of the electrostatic attraction between cations and anions
