Vocab Flashcards
Ideational Apraxia
Inability to UNDERSTAND demands of motor task
Ideomotor Apraxia I
Inability to ACCESS correct motor plan
Ideomotor Apraxia II
Inability to IMPLEMENT appropriate motor plan
Dressing Apraxia
Inability to dress self 2* impairment in body schema or perceptual motor function
Stereotypic Movement
Hard wired motor patterns
Automated Movements
Movement patterns that have become automatic (ex: driving, walking)
Hemiballismus
Violent thrashing of the limb contralateral to the lesion
Ballismus
Bilateral lesion leading to violent thrashing of limb(s)
Athetosis
Slow, flailing, purposeless distal movement
Chorea
Dance-like, sudden, jerky movements
Dystonia
Repetitive twisting movements leading to abnormal postures
Dyskinesia
Rhythmic, repetitive movements with odd qualities
Tardive Dyskinesia
Odd movements 2* chronic use of neuroleptics
Tics
Brief, involuntary, purposeless movements resulting from increased sensitivity to dopamine
Echolalia
Involuntary repetition of words spoken by someone else
Palilalia
Involuntary repetition of words or sentences
Coprolalia
Involuntary utterance of curse words
Thalamus Syndrome
Hypo- or Hypersensitivity to sensations
Thalamus Tumors
Cause paralysis of the involved body part of contralateral side
Reticular Activating System
Role = wakefulness
- alerts cortex to incoming sensory info
- filters out unnecessary info
Reticular Inhibiting System
Role = sleep & unconsciousness
* calms body in response to specific sensory data
Reticular Formation
Role = regulates consciousness, controls muscle tone, controls pain, regulates circadian rhythm
Persistent Vegetative State
- Neurologic destruction in cerebral hemisphere(s) 2* decreased oxygen from cardiac or respiratory arrest
- Cough, swallow, and gag reflexes remain intact
Brain Death
- All brain stem functions lost; heart may continue to beat
* Cough, gag & swallow reflexes lost
Astereognosis
Inability to identify objects by touch alone
Two-Point Discrimination
Inability to determine if touched by 2 points or 1
Agraphesthesia
Inability to interpret letters formed on hand contralateral to affected side
Extinction of Simultaneous Stimulation
Inability to feel touch on affected side when touched on 2 different areas on opposite sides of the body
Abarognosis
Inability to estimate weight of objects
Atopognosia
Inability to localize exact origin of sensation
Broca’s Aphasia
Nonfluent speech, can understand language but can’t express it
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Can’t understand spoken language, but can speak
