Ostensible
Something appearing to be true.
Ex.- Her delay may have a much deeper meaning than the ostensible reason given.
Soporific
Sleep inducing or causes drowsiness.
Ex.- Without taking head to the label, the man took three of the soporific pills.
Plucked
To be suddenly removed from a place or situation.
Ex.- Jeremy was plucked from his Extra Curricular classes do to his poor grades.
Dissipated
Overindulging in sensual pleasures.
Ex.- The dissipated young addict couldn’t find satisfaction in the substitutes of his old habits.
Madeira
Fortified white wine from the island of Madeira.
Ex.- We served Madeira to our guests last night.
Cachinnation
A loud laugh.
Ex.- Though I can’t speak Spanish, the crowd’s cachinnation made me wish I did.
Rookery
A breeding colony for birds.
Ex.- Since he’s daughter has shown a distinct love for birds, he took her down to the rookery for her birthday.
Cuirass
Armor consisting of a breastplate and a backplate fastened together.
Ex.- The man was wearing a Cuirass in the old painting.
Belied
Fail to give a true notion or failed to be fulfilled.
Ex.- The notion that the man had been completely reformed had been belied do to he’s behavior the other night.
Solicitude
Care or concern for someone or something.
Ex.- The man was completely driven by his solicitude for his wife.
Requisition
Demand for use of by the public.
Ex.- The cafeteria would be in requisition on Friday as a place for the parent conference.
Conjecture
An opinion formed on the littlest information.
Ex.- Though he’s conjecture of the topic was rather cleverly put, he’s argument was far from persuasive.
Stile
A stairway arranged in such away so that people can get up it but animals cannot.
Ex- The rat eagerly tried to make its way up the the stile.
Eccentricity
Slightly strange and usual.
Ex.- Her eccentricity is one of contributes to her unique personality.
Piquant
Pleasantly stimulating or exciting to the mind.
