Balance
Elements in a design have equal “weight” based on an imaginary line in the middle of the picture.
Graphic Design
The art or skill of combining text and picture in advertisements, magazines, or books. The process of communicating ideas visually.
Tone
The quality of color
Complimentary colors
A pair of primary or secondary colors based on a color wheel comprised of two colors on opposite sides of a color wheel, which when placed next to each other make big appear brighter. When blended together they creat a neutral tone/color.
Analogous colors
Refers to any one of a groups of related colors that are near reach other on the color wheel.
Subtractive color
Subtractive color mixing means that you begin with white and ultimately end with black as you add more a d more colors, resulting in dark color until black. Start with primary colors (red, yellow, blue in paint or cyan, yellow, magenta in print) and mix to make secondary colors. Mostly used with waits, pastels, etc.
Additive colors
Additive color mixing begins with black and ends with white as more color is added to result is lighter and tends to lighten. Primary colors of light red, green, blue, when added together can create any color, when all added together created white light. This is used when we see colors in a computer screen.
Focal Point
The center of interest or activity in art; most important part of a picture.
Saturation
The purity of a color
Intensity
The brightness or dullness of a color
Contrast
The arrangement of opposite elements, ways to show contrast can be through size, color etc.
Value
The lightness or darkness if a color. Adding value to object can add depth and dimension.
Monochromatic
Having or appearing to have one color (for example a drawing using all shades of blue, black, and white would be monochromatic because black and white are not considered colors)
Exposure
The amount of light per unit area. Used in photography, if a picture is over exposed there is too much light and results in a “washed out” or whiter photo.
Color harmony
The blending of hues, shades, and tints to create a pleasing effect. Groups of colors that work well together, such as primary colors, monochromatic, etc.
