Vocab Flashcards
Reducing agent / reductant
Gives up electrons. INCREASES charge
Oxidizing agent / oxidant
Takes electron for itself. LOWER charge.
Oxidation-reduction / redox reactions
A reaction that has oxidation accompanied by reduction. (See definitions of oxidant and reductant)
Displacement Reactions
Redox between metals and acids and metals and salts
Paramagnetic
Very weakly attracted by poles of a magnet, electrons not completely spin paired
Coulomb’s Law
Everything held together by electrostatic, negative electron attracted to positive nucleus
Aufbau Principle
Electrons placed in orbitals, sublevels and levels in order of increasing energy
Pauli Exclusion Principle
No two electrons have same quantum numbers
Diamagnetic
Spin paired sublevels filled
Electron Affinity
Energy when electron is added. If addition makes more stable, energy given off
Electronegativity
How strongly electrons attracted to nucleus of other atoms. Increases across period decreases down group.
Dipole
Arrow in molecular diagram points to element with higher electronegativity
