Vocab 2 Flashcards
Anthropogenic
Caused by humans
Bioregion
An assemblage of local plants, animals, and insects covering a large are such as a tropical rainforest or a grassland
Climate region
An area on a map where similar climatic conditions prevail over a large area
Climograph
Graph of average high and low temperatures and precipitation for an entire year (Usually for a specific city)
Continentality
Describes climate regions in the interior of continents, where they are removed from moderating ocean influences, and characterized by hot summers and cold winters; at least one month must average below freezing
Convergent Plate Boundaries
A place where two tectonic plates are forced together by convection cells deep within Earth, often resulting in collision of plates that creates mountains; the Cascade Range in Dc and Oregon for example
Desertification
Spread of desert like conditions in semi-arid areas
Divergent Plates Boundaries
A place where two tectonic plates move in opposite directions, which often allows magma to flow to Earth’s surface
Global Warming
An increase in the average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere
Green Revolution
Agricultural program that began in the 1950’s and involved new agricultural techniques using genetically altered seeds, along with high inputs of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Insolation
Incoming solar energy (radiation) that enters the atmosphere adjacent to Earth
Maritime climates
Climate moderated by proximity to oceans or large seas; it is usually cool, cloudy, and wet without temperature extremes
Plate tectonics
The theory that explains the gradual movement of large geographical platforms along Earth’s surface; this theory postulates that Earth is made up of a large number of geological plates that move slowly across the surface; it helps explain both the inner workings and the surface landscape features of Earth
Steppe
A vegetative region characterized by shorter, less dense grasslands
Water Stress
An environmental planning tool used to predict areas that have or will have serious water problems based on the per capita demand and supply of freshwater
