The suggested or implied meaning of a word apart form the thing it explicitly names
Denotation
THe literal meaning of a word or phrase
Characterization
The way a writer makes a person in a story seem real
Allusion
An implied or indirect reference to a person, place, or thing in history or another literary work
Imagery
The use of picture to visualize a mood, idea or character
Foreshadow
To give a suggestion of something that has not yet happened
Motif
A recurring object, structure, or concept in a literary work
Juxtapose
To place things together in order to create an interesting effect or show how they are similar or different
Genre
A particular type or category of literature or art
Antagonist
One that contends with or opposes the protagonist
Protagonist
THe character in a story with whom the audience is meant to sympathize with. The main character.
Epiphany
Moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or different way
