In the election of 1824 there were 17 candidates. Andrew Jackson won the most popular votes but not the most electoral votes so he lost the election. Henry Clay also ran but lost to John Quincy Adams. Some say that a corrupt bargain happened and Adams made a deal with Clay that is he won he would put him as the Secretary of State.
