Fetishism
Form of sexual behaviour in which gratification is linked to an abnormal degree to a particular object, activity, part of the body.
Male gaze
In feminist theory, male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world, in the visual arts and in literature, from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presets and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer
Voyeurism
The practice of gaining sexual pleasure from watching others when they are naked or engaged in sexual activity
Objectification
Action of degrading someone to the status of a mere object
Hypallage
When an adjective is put with a noun other than the one to which it refers e.g. ‘falling autumn shook the leaves’ -> falling is talking about the leaves, not autumn
Parallel syntax
Device where adjacent sentences or clauses are grammatically identical or similar; this gives emphasis to the meaning and achieves a rhythmic pull that holds the attention of the reader e.g. ‘Theirs not to make reply / Theirs not to reason why / Theirs but to do and die
Liminality
To be in a state of transition, in between two different states
Right of passage
A ritual or ceremony signifying an event in a person’s life, indicative of a transition from one stage to another, as from adolescence to adulthood
Stream of consciousness
Narrative method that attempts to depict the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind of a narrator
