A monologue spoken by a theatrical character which expresses the character’s inner thoughts and emotions.
Soliloquy
Usually a brief comment, rather than a speech, such as a monologue or soliloquy.
Aside
The central character of a drama
Protagonist
The force working against the protagonist or central character
Antagonist
A character whose personality and attitude contrast sharply with those of another character.
Foil
A drama that ends in catastrophe
Tragedy
A main character cursed by fate and possessed of a tragic flaw
Tragic Hero
The character flaw or error of a tragic hero that leads to his/her downfall.
Tragic Flaw
This can be a problem facing the hero as a result of the plot or a “bad guy” character
External Conflict
The struggle the hero engages in with his/her fatal flaw
Internal Conflict
Things end poorly for everyone, including the “good guys”.
Lack of Poetic Justice
The audience knows more than the character
Dramatic Irony
A humorous scene or speech intended to lighten the mood
Comedic Relief
When a person is giving a speech
Monologue
A reference within a work to something the audience knows
